If an African safari is included in your Bucket List of 101 facts to do prior to your die, then you will likely have a mental picture of how this experience will unfold. The reality is that there are many varying safari experiences to choose from to you and it will be well worth your time to become familiar with what’s achievable — and only then chose what’s affordable Some decades back, I compiled a list ten criteria (that magic number) that I would personally apply when evaluating my own safari projects. The ranking and scoring is entirely subjective, but I’ll throw them into the discussion, in case you too find them useful.
If your idea of safari holidays is a lot of dusty rides in open-air off-road four-by-fours and long walks over brush stalking game that got scared away by the noise and the smell of petrol fumes, don’t worry. There are better ways to enjoy a safari. One of them involves a romantic and traditional way that hearkens to the days of old-time hunters: the horseback safari! Holidays on horseback are getting more major in Southern Africa, and visitors agree there’s no well way to enjoy the experience.
Let’s first define what it is that we mean by “safari”. The Swahili word roughly translates to mean “long journey”, so it has its origins in East Africa to describe the long sojourns that shooters would take into the wilderness. In current times, it’s a word extra mostly applied by the tourism field not for shooting trips but for reduced trips to observe and photograph wildlife. Safari holidays on horseback are popular primarily due to they enable you to get closer to the wildlife than you ever would on motorised vehicles. Unlike in a motor vehicle, horses make lower noise and produce no unnatural fumes that cause wildlife to be on guard and hide away. Not only that, the smell of horses as well masks the scent of humans, so the wildlife is less apt to be shy.
Your opportunities of mobile closer to your quarry is bigger- imagine getting able to get close to the awesome giraffes, elephants, leopards, hippos and rhino that you’ve been dreaming of seeing on your safari holidays! If traipsing after lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos, rhinos and other mammals isn’t your idea of a wild time, there are still plenty of options to enjoy hoofing over South Africa with no having to go on a game safari. Holidays on horseback can additionally feature riding trails over long white-sand beaches, wetlands and mountain trails, where you can see birds, rare orchids and alternative breathtaking natural sights.
Alternative big-name destinations for horseback safari holidays are the nature reserves in KwaZulu Natal, Kromdaai Conservancy near Johannesberg, and the Waterberg Nature Reserve – where you can as well see alternative animals such as zebras, impala, kudu and eland as well as the common South African wildlife. Have the internet and research any options that interest you from the list below (and else options that I may have missed). I recommend thinking about every option counter to criteria that are critical to you. Another way of course is to go right to a travel agent with your budget and ask for quotes on safari options. Unless you’ve researched and defined your specific requirements, then you stand the risk of only obtaining what they want to sell to you.
There are numerous safari experiences attainable in East Africa and across Southern Africa, every worthy of careful consideration. Your choice will depend on budget, interests, the importance of life’s comforts on safari, amount of fitness of individuals in your party, time available and the ages of family members in your party. If you’re one of those whose idea of safari holidays is hunting for nice food and wine, there are riding trails that go through the wine country with stops at farms and vineyards where you can example amazing food, wine, cheese and other local goods.
