Wildlife Volunteering Africa

Facts About Kenya Volunteer Work
There are many opportunities for volunteers abroad and Africa is always a popular destination. If it’s a country that appeals to you then you’ll want to take a closer look at becoming a volunteer in Kenya. Although famous for its stunning scenery and amazing wildlife, and thus popular for safari vacations, Kenya is nevertheless a very poor country and one of the areas that needs your help most.
Kenya is a fascinating place. There’s great diversity not just in wildlife but in living conditions. In parts of Nairobi you’ll find the great mansions of yesteryear and in complete opposite the Kyangombe Slums, where you can give indispensable help with orphaned children, or by assisting in the local clinics or, if you have a more practical nature, by helping build walls or paint classrooms. No matter what your particular skills you can have a remarkably positive impact on these people.
Despite the poverty and very high levels of unemployment, Kenya volunteer work is an uplifting experience. Whether it’s helping at a local school in the tea plantations of Limuru or working as a medical assistant in Nairobi you’ll see many smiling faces and meet people with a great willingness to learn and to interact. You’ll even get the chance to learn a bit of Swahili!
We wouldn’t be being fair if we said that being a volunteer in Kenya was all easy. In Mukuru Slums, for example, the medical clinic works with a population of 62,000 people. Having said that, if volunteering in Africa appeals to you then it likely that you are the kind of person that isn’t afraid of hard work and someone who wants to make a positive contribution. If that’s you then Kenya is just the place and you certainly won’t get bored!
Of course it’s not all hard work. You’ll deserve your leisure time and there are few place in the world that can offer what Kenya has in store. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city, the east coast is popular for water sports, there is tremendous ethnic diversity, vibrant culture and who hasn’t heard of the incredible Maasi Mara? If you volunteer in Kenya you’ll be helping some of the most needy people in Africa. You’ll be rewarded with a tremendous – and justified – sense of achievement and you’ll have the experience of a lifetime.

Politicians and Poachers: The Political Economy of Wildlife Policy in Africa $53.98 This book explores the politics of wildlife conservation policy in Africa, specifically Zambia, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. The book addresses a general question: Why don’t wildlife policies seem to be working? Rather than use standard explanations such as "bureaucratic inefficiency" or "corrupt dictators," the book demonstrates how politicians at all levels use wildlife policy for their own political ends, which may or may not include conservation. The book uses electoral and archival data, as well as interviews with individuals ranging from presidents to poachers to address this issue. |
